Honourable

F. H. May, C.M.GUS

Colonial Secretary.

sir,

I beg to enclose for the information of

His Excellency the Report on the Work of the Department of Practical Chinese in the University of London for 1901 to 1902.

In doing so my Committee would suggest to

His Excellency that the excellent work being done by the Depart- ment and hitherto guaranteed by the China Association would fully justify His Excellency in recommending a moderate grant in aid to further the good work which cannot fail to be useful in facilitating further intercourse in the Chinese language between the natives of the country and future British residents

in Hongkong and China.

I would also take this opportunity of inti-

mating to you that Mr. H. E. Pollock, K.C., will be Chairman of the Association during the absence of the writer for the next seven months. May I ask you to extend to Mr. Pollock the same kind courtesy which you have extended to the writer and favour

him with the perusal of any reports which you may also be

forwarding to the Chamber of Commerce.

I have etc.,

(Sd.) Geo. W. F. Playfair,

Chairman.
